Copacetic Surprises

January 17, 2008

Today was a pretty good day when compared to most.  Being Thursday, I didn’t get into the office till noon to get some work finished before a great practice for the girls soccer team that I coach.  Speaking of which, even though it’s still early in the season this is by far the most obedient and hardest working team I’ve had by far…this the kind of team that makes coaching fun regardless of the record.  So it was a good day with a good, hard practice and I was on my way home to spend some time with Meredith.

Just as I was pulling out of the church parking lot, one of our high school students was pulling in and flagged me down before I drove on my merry way.  The student was concerned about the participation level of other students at an upcoming event.  Having a student express a concern or complaint isn’t necessarily uncommon, but what followed was awesome.  This student who isn’t the most active in our group followed their complaint by apologizing for their recent truancy.  They then proceeded with a solution that would ensure high participation.

For those of you who don’t work with students, this is not a common occurrence.  It isn’t often that a student comes to you and apologizes for not coming to programming, but it’s downright rare that one will come to you with a concern accompanied by workable solution.  The student had a great solution and we are going to implement it.  My pretty good day became fantastically memorable in a matter of a 5 minute conversation.

Afterwards, I made my way home finally to a decent meal and some very enjoyable time with Meredith.  We had a nice evening filled with an episode of Iron Chef America (Batali won) and some hardcore Rockband jamming…all in all, quite copacetic.
