Matt,

If you get a chance, go to Tommaso's (http://tommasosnorthbeach.com/)....the BEST italian food I've ever had in my life. It's a tiny "hole in the wall" family owned resturaunt, but it's amazing food. The pizza and the lasagna especially. Have fun in SF and say hello to your family for me.

I think our greatest hurdle to overcome is our audience: everyone. With new communication tools being institutionalized every 5-7 years, every generation of people has a preferred method. With so many different audiences and preferred methods, confusion is imminent. The biggest pitfall that churches fall into is trying to communicate all these methods simultaneously, which in the end often alienates everyone as there is one or two methods they find useful and 4 or 5 they just see as a waste of time and resources. We need to utilze many different forms of communication (many of which we are already using), but we need them in ways that they are not subjected to people who prefer different methods often lead to annoyance and energy better spent elsewhere.

On the flipside, I think the church is hindered in communication by the evolution of professional staff. While their guidance and leadership is most certainly beneficial for the ministries of many churches, the too prevelant practice of outsourcing all ministry responsibilities to church staff by laity severely impairs the overall communication of a congregation. With one person fulfilling the ministry responsibilities, including communication, their preferences will undoubtably appeal to some while alienating a far greater portion of the congregation. Overall, both church staff and laity need to be more unified to ensure successful communication.
